Funny Quote from Joss Whedon

I came accross this quote in an interview Joss Whedon gave to CrochetMe.com (via the Craftzine Blog). Joss Whedon is the guy that created the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" TV series, as well as the short lived, underrated series "Firefly".

"I'm aware of the desperate rivalry between the knitters and the crocheters...It's an age-old war. Like the werewolves and the vampires. I think Underworld was actually originally about crocheters and knitters but they thought it would be too controversial so they changed it to vampires and werewolves."

I laughed when I read this. I must be a hybrid then...because I know how to do both. But I prefer crochet...it's much easier. I like vampires better than werewolves too. Hmmm...

Here's a few more gems...

"Like, good people in movies and TV... have things that are wooly and handmade and very sort of earthy, and evil people live in cold, steel, modernist houses, you know, and wear shiny suits. It's sort of inevitable."

These last ones are not really "funny" persay, but they stood out to me.

"I mean, let's face it, in the media there are now eight companies. In any mall you walk into, there are now eight stores: there's gonna be a Gap, there's gonna be a Banana Republic. Everything is becoming consolidated, so where there used to be lots of variety, there are now, like, ten giants and tons of tiny little villagers. And yeah, the villagers are going to start making their own stuff because the materials will be available to all of them, and we can't all just do things the way the giants want..."

"Well, you know, at the end of the day right now, you can create something; what you can't usually do is make a fortune off of it... it's not about, "I'm going to crochet the most hats! I'm going to be the fastest! I'm going to be the most [mumbled] millionaire without enjoying the process and the product." "

What Are Your Home Design Elements?

I've been watching design/organization shows on HGTV all afternoon while rearranging my living room in an attempt to figure out where to put my Christmas tree...and I thought of this question:

Q:
You just won a makeover on one of those HGTV design shows...the designer asks you what your favorite design elements/inspirations/colors are...what are your answers?

A:
- African/Asian inspired
- Bamboo
- Natural Elements
- Animal print (in tasteful doses)
- Colors depend on the room

Of course, my living room already has all these elements. It's my bedroom that's due for a makeover...at least paint-wise. I have a red & black Asian feel envisioned for it.

This is when we first re-did it...the couch and chairs are flipped now, the two spherical paper lanterns are now in the bedroom, and the bamboo plant is in a different spot. We like to re-arrange things occasionally.

And for those who are curious...yes, that is Monsters Inc. on the TV.

Goodbye Tribute for Sold Monsters

Here's a goodbye tribute post for some of my monster friends that aquired new homes this weekend...

*To anyone out there who was the recipient or buyer for any of these monsters, send me a picture of them with their new owner and I'll post it on the blog. It's a tradition I've done whenever I've given away monsters before to take a picture of them with their new, happy owner. But I didn't do it at the show because I figured it'd be kind of creepy of me if I asked to take a picture of everyone who bought a monster! *

I never thought I'd bring myself to sell this little black argyle guy. He was one of my favorites. But he went to a sweet old lady in a wheelchair who liked him because he "looked like a kitty". And she also told me her favorite part of him was his little heart.

This "socktopus"...or, I think it was more of a "glovetopus"...was a favorite of mine too!
My mom seemed almost sad to see this purple toesock guy go. He was one of her favorites.

A friend who was the teacher at the preschool I used to work at came and bought up at least 6 monsters! This purple fuzzy guy went home with her to be a gift for one of her nieces...

...her husband bought this purple fuzzy guy for his co-worker. (Anyone else noticing a theme of purple here?)...

...this turquoise sparkley stripey guy was bought as a gift for their other teenage niece...

... and this Nubbin was picked out by their 5-year-old daughter. I was told she'd actually picked it out on Etsy. She also took one of my business cards to show all her friends!...what a sweetie!
They also got two other Nubbins to give as gifts.
The other monsters that I sold were Nubbins that I didn't have pictures of...and one itty-bitty orange/yellow/pink stripey sock guy with orange button eyes that I never took a picture of.

So goodbye my dear monster friends! Go forth and make some new people happy!

My First Craft Show! (part 2)

Hey there Blogger Land!
I had my very first craft show today!!! It was at the CDS Life Transition Center for those with developmental disabilities in Webster, NY. Mom came with me and we had a lot of fun.

I did pretty well. Not spectacular (I did come home with monsters)...but pretty well...I sold about 15 monsters. I thought the Nubbins would be my biggest seller, but they were about equal with the sock monsters. I saw at least 4 people that I used to work with...three from the Communication Center and one from Ivan Green. It was nice to see some familliar faces (one of them ended up being my best customer!). And Mom saw a couple people she knew from church.

Baskets are so nice! They made packing up a breeze! This was all I had to take out to the car! (of course, it was nice that CDS provided the table and chairs).

The black thing this is an orange crate I've had for years (it came from my great-aunt's farm) that I painted black...although it's unpainted on the bottom, so you can still see the original logo. We usually use it as a nightstand at home. I have another crate to match it, and was originally going to bring both, but decided on just the one. I was originally going to bring my sewing machine too, in order to get some work done there, but I decided against that too, since I had a lot of hand-sewing to get done (which I didn't even get done!)

It's Because I'm Black Isn't It?!

Sorry, I gotta rant for a moment...
In my blog-browing tonight...I came across this article via the Apartment Therapy blog about a supposed bias against black dogs.

"Is there a prejudice against black dogs? It's an unspoken superstition among shelter owners that black dogs are harder to place, perhaps because they're considered mean or evil. Or it could be, in this age of searching for a pet via the web, that they don't photograph as well. This week's feature story looks at this issue and showcases seven black dogs that should help put that rumour to rest. "

COME ON!!! Are they kidding??? They got to play the color card with dogs now??? I'm stuck somewhere between flat disbelief that people believe such a thing is true and thinking that if it actually is true, that it's just too ridiculous! All I have to say is that

I actually prefer dark colored animals. I've always wanted a pure black cat and a black lab. Both my dog and my parents' dog are black and they're both the sweetest things ever...and they photograph beautifully!

I must say as well that Rottweilers get a really bad rep. Darn movies and mean junkyard owners! King (my parents' dog...the big one shown) is the sweetest dog ever!

Moonflower Opening Night

I went to Moonflower Handcrafted Gallery's Grand Opening tonight. Mom came with me. I was glad to see that a LOT of people showed up...to the point that it was kind of hard to get around the shop! There was a lot of nice stuff there...jewelry, art, candles, dog collars, etc. Mom bought a piney scented soy candle (called Ozark Mountian) and a felted Christmas tree brooch.
Here are my monsters...

I saw a lot of different people picking them up and looking at them, but they were all still there by the time Mom and I left. No biggie. I didn't expect them to sell right away.

I gave Brandi, the shop owner, one of my new sock monsters as a kind of "thank you"/"congratulations" gift. She told me that her friends are already threatening to steal it from her!

I'm also donating one of my newest sweater monsters to a toy drive my husband's office is participating in...the "Pirate Toy Fund". This guy is rather robot-y looking isn't he? I think it's the straight lines and how I didn't add a mouth. That first set of horizontal lines imply a mouth.
But he's a robot with a heart! I hope he makes some kid really happy.

And The Winner Is...

Thanks to everyone who commented yesterday for the Give-Away. You all made my day. I think the most comments I've ever gotten on a single post before has been 3!

Some people forgot to give me a name for the monster however, which I did mention in the post was a deciding factor in picking the winner. But for every one of you that forgot, there were a bunch more that gave cme some really fun ones!

I must say that it was very tough picking a winner. Some of my favorites were:
- Jagger (after Mick Jagger , because of the big lips)
- Mr. Scruffles
- Wonky Willard
- Gürkin
- Mr. Slurpstein the Third
- Purple Lipinski
- Basil Sludge-Fuzzworthy

- Phfancy Phfillip Phfishinger "(all pronounced with a very spitty spray)"
- Sir Fernando Flounce Mouth
- Zarthag
...

There were so many great names! I finally needed to enlist my husband to help me decide. But in the end we decided on...

Stripes McDougal!

So Bird, you are the winner! I'm sure Stripes will have a good home with you. If you had just said "Stripes", I might not have picked it, but the McDougal was what did it We have a soft spot for the Scottish...plus it just sounded so funny...especially if you try saying it with a Scottish accent. Congratulations! E-mail your address info to kira(at)klsinclair.com so I can ship him to you!

Thanks everyone for all the great names. I will definitely log them away to name future monsters. I wish I could afford to give everyone a free monster. But you can always obtain a funny monster of your own from my Etsy shop. You just might end up seeing one with the name you suggested!

This was so much fun that I just might have a monthly monster give-away. So make sure to check back here occasionally!

Give-Away Day is here!

Gather 'round all you crafters, bloggers and blog-lurkers...It's Give-Away-Day!

Leave a comment on this post with the best, silliest, most fun, or most random monster name you can come up with for this little guy, and you can win him!

***Don't forget to give him a name in your comment! My final decision on the winner will be based on the monster name I like best!***

He's one of my "vintage" sock monsters...with button eyes and those unforgettable fuzzy lips! He'll be a perfect gift for the little monster in your life!
The deadline is 11:59 pm tonight. Please remember to include your name in your comment (it's hard for "Anonymous" to be a winner!).

(Oh...and I'm not shipping internationally...only within the US...so sorry! Especially to the UK-ers...)

Moonflower Handcrafted Gallery

I recently received a consignment offer via Etsy Conversations from Brandi of Moonflower Handcrafted Gallery. I went over there today and...it's official! I am now officially selling my monsters in a real live shop!

There was another girl named Carla at the shop tonight helping Brandi set up things. She does cute applique on recycled sweaters and turns them into adorable hats, shirts and other sweet things to dress your wee ones in. Here is a blog I found of another fellow crafter who is also selling her wares at the shop.

The grand opening will be on Thursday, December 4th. 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Come and show us some love!

My sweater monsters are just one of the things I've contributed. I'll probably contribute more after the craft show this weekend.

Lots of Opportunity!

So..I brought my sewing machine to Ohio with me and got a bunch of monsters done. It's a good thing too, because the opportunities to sell my monsters feel like they are pouring in! It's because of the holiday season I suppose.

I checked my e-mail when we got home last night and found I had gotten another message over Etsy to do a craft show called "100 for 100". The idea is to have 100 or more artists/vendors with items priced under 100 dollars. It's this upcoming Friday and next Friday from 6pm-10pm. I want to do it, but I am debating about maybe only doing next week's show so I can make sure I have enough inventory for Saturday's show (As of now, I have 83 sellable monsters). I don't want to end up selling a lot my inventory at Friday night's show and not have anything for Saturday morning. Plus, I have been offered to have my monsters in a local shop that focuses on handmade goods and original art from local artists. That shop's grand opening is this Thurday and the owner wants to get together with me this week before the shop opens. So I'll need at least a few pieces to have in her shop

I am a little overwhelmed right now, but also excited!
Enough blogging...I need to get to work!

Christmas Tradition Survey

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Gift bags or pretty gift boxes if I can. I hate wrapping paper.
2. Real tree or Artificial? I grew up with real...CJ grew up with artificial. I insisted that our first Christmas as a married couple, we have a real tree (see picture at right). The next year, we got an artificial because we still had pine needles in the corners of our apartment!
3. When do you put up the tree? My parents used to put it up 2 weeks before Christmas. My hubby and I don't have a set time...but sometime in December (and no earlier!).
4. When do you take the tree down? Whenever we got to it. I think it made it to April last year!
5. Do you like eggnog? not really
6. Favorite gift received as a child? I have memories of a talking, Teddy Ruxpin-esque Fievel doll. But maybe that's just because we have a home video of it.
7. Hardest person to buy for? My dad
8. Easiest person to buy for? My nieces (I have to stop myself from buying them more! Kids are so fun to buy for!)
9. Do you have a nativity scene? no
10. Mail or email Christmas cards? mail...if I send any
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I can't think of any. I subscribe to "it's the thought that counts"...plus most people know my tastes pretty well.
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? The Muppet Christmas Carol!
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? Whenever I think of it. Probably early to mid-November.
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? probably
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Grands biscuits
16. Lights on the tree? yes...but not the multicolored or flashing/blinking ones. I like white. Our tree has a strand of white and a strand of blue.
17. Favorite Christmas song? God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Depends on the year...we alternate. If we have Thanksgiving with his family in Cleveland, we have Christmas with mine here, and vice-versa.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? yes
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star
21 Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Growing up we did it in the morning, but three years ago, since CJ had to work in the morning, my family did it on Christmas Eve. We liked doing it that way and have done it like that in the years since.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? The never-ending holiday music in the stores. It's killer if you work in retail. I hated it when I worked at Goodwill and we were forced to listen to Christmas music in the back room. I like "church" christmas music...but not all the "fluff" holiday music...although certain songs grow on me like "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas"!
23. Favorite ornament theme or color? We have a blue and silver theme
24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? I'm a Christmas ham kind of gal
25. What do you want for Christmas this year? A hippopotomus!...no really, I always hate this question. I can never think of anything specific. I'm blessed and have it pretty good...but I'm sure I'll think of something. I did want my own iPod until CJ started letting me carry his!
26. Who is most likely to respond to this? Missie and/or Mom
27.Who is least likely to respond to this? anyone who doesn't read my blog!

My First Craft Show!

God is cool.
Remember about how I was saying in my last post about "if I do a show"? Well...lo and behold...it was no sooner had I published the post that I got an email notifying me of a new Etsy Conversation (kind of a private message thing within Etsy), where I was offered to participate and be a vendor (for free!) at a local holiday craft show!
YAAAAAAAAAAAY! My first craft show!!!!!!

I'd better get busy. I guess I'll be sewing like a maniac tomorrow! Gotta make more holiday Nubbins! I should get my business cards designed and printed too. I'm going to be busy. I'm going to Cleveland on Wednesday though for Thanksgiving with CJ's family, spending the weekend there and coming back on Sunday. Maybe I'll just bring my sewing machine with me. If I'm going to be there for 4 days, I might as well be productive!

Monsters on the Line

I was "cleaning" my desk last night and redid my "display" of monsters I love too much to part with. I like the clothesline thing. If I ever do a booth at a show, I think this is how I'd want to display them (sans the desk junk!).

Does anyone miss (or remember) my fuzzy-lipped/big-lipped monsters? Should I start making them again? My style has definitely evolved from when I first started monstermaking. These big-lipped guys below are two of my favorites out of my earlier creations...my "vintage" monsters.

Finished Nubbins

Here is my first set of Nubbins! (check 'em out at my Etsy shop!)

The red & green ones are my featured "Holiday Edition" Nubbins. They'd make great stocking stuffers!

I'm really trying to get more on top of marketing my monsters and my shop...especially with the holidays coming up. I'm doing the Give-Away Day on December 3rd, and planning on doing a "toy drop" inspired by the Toy Society. Anyone got any other low-cost/free marketing tips?

Hmm...I need to get myself some calling cards/business cards.

Food Chain Plush

I caught sight of these funny little "Food Chain Friends" monster sets over at Ohdeedoh.

I love them! It's a cute and brilliant idea. I'd love to figure out how to make a simple set of my own.

Geeky Elvish Name Translations

This is something completely random and geeky I found via a post on Angry Chicken...with this site, you too can find your name in elvish. Yeah...I know...I am an uber-geek. You should have seen me when the Lord of the Rings movies first came out...I was REALLY an uber-geek.

Yes...I have an Elvish "tengwar" font (the text is my name spelled with elvish letters). Like I said...uber-geek (but quite not as uber-geeky as some people). The picture was a result of me playing in photoshop after some friends told me I looked like Arwen/Liv Tyler (which I consider a big complement since she's so pretty).

Anyway, I couldn't find my name spelled correctly on the elvish name translation site (no one ever has it spelled "right"...K-I-R-A) but the three names listed below are the closest. They all have similar meanings too...

Keira (Black-haired) - Moréfindiel (pronounced "More-ay-finn-dee-ell")
Kiara (Dark) - Móreadhiel (pronounced "More-ay-ah-thee-ell")
Kiera (Dusky) - Dolledhiel (pronounced "Dole-eh-thee-ell")

I'm getting a "dark" theme here. My name does mean "dark" in Irish, but in Persian it means "sun" , and in Russian it means "light". All are accurate. I have dark hair and light, fair skin. I feel I am both in my personality as well.
Here's my hubby's name...

Connor (Strong-willed) - Melcindómien (pronounced "Mehl-kin-doe-mee-ehn")

(Man, Elvish names are freakin' long!)
I love how fitting the meanings are for both of us! Although I thought Connor meant "wise". I just looked it up in one of my name books and it says Connor is a form of Conan, which is a Scottish name that does mean "wise". But another book I have (I have a thing for baby name books) says it means "high desire" in Irish. I'd say all of them are accutate.

Give-Away Day

Hey there blog peeps! I'm attempting to do a little promotion for my shop. A friend of mine emailed me and let me know about Sew Mama Sew's Give Away Day on December 3rd. I will be planning on participating and doing a give-away on that day on my blog.

PS: I have some red & green "holiday edition" Nubbins sewn and stuffed! I just need to photograph them and get them up on my shop.

Sneak Peek: Nubbins

Here's a sneak peek look at my newest monsters...the Nubbins. They'll be small, simple little monsters with no arms.

Hopefully I'll get some sewing done tomorrow and have most of these little guys assembled. I wanted to make some monsters that will be small and simple, and quick and easy to make so I can sell them for a cheaper price. I was inspired by the fact that one of my friend's kid's favorite monsters that I have made is this little orange guy with no arms.

Mad Scientist Studio

I have a fascination with how certain people can use found objects and old random junk and turn it into beautiful art or shabby-chic, rustic decor. I can be such a style schitzophrenic sometimes, because I love so many different styles, but can't possibly do them all cohesively in one apartment.

Anyway, check out this post over at Design*Sponge. I only skimmed over the words, I was looking more at the pictures.
Sometimes I wish I had a space to have a "mad scientist" studio. That looks a mess, but isn't a mess all at the same time. My "studio" right now is just a plain mess. That's why we have bamboo screens to shut it away from view when we have people over.
~Sigh~ I'll get organized someday.

Purple FIngerless Gloves

I finally finished the purple fingerless gloves! Aren't they gorgeous? Someone is getting them for Christmas...

I need to get cracking on a pink pair next for someone else for Christmas...
