Vote for the TARDIS in the RNEST Monthly Challenge for September!

Hey there!
Remember the plush Doctor Who TARDIS Police Box I made?  I've entered it in the RNEST Monthly Challenge for September!  The theme for this month is "Geeks Have More Fun!"  And with a smart, quirky hero like the Doctor, who has more fun than Whovians? ;)

Please take a second to jump over to the RNEST Blog and vote for me in the poll in the upper-righthand corner of the page.  As usual, there is NO registering required!  Just click your choice and then click submit! (and you can vote once per computer, so if you have more than one computer and want to give me an extra boost, you can vote multiple times!  You can even vote from your smartphone!)

The poll closes Wednesday night (9/12) at midnight!

What's On My Worktable Wednesday: Nubbin-Sized Plush TARDIS

I'm a little afraid to post pictures of this...since I'm afraid of the flood of custom requests I may get to make more.  I learned about the power of Google through the requests I've been getting as a result of the "Hobbes" tiger doll I made.  Plus...I know how crazy Doctor Who fans are.
But...here it is.  I made a Nubbin-sized plush TARDIS this week in an attempt to get some sewing motivation and my creative juices flowing. (even though I need to be working on finishing up 3 more custom requested tiger dolls!)

I painstakingly hand-embroidered that "Police Box" text. (emphasis on "pain"...I forgot to wear my wrist brace and my wrist hates me now!)  I already have a buyer for this one.  They should feel very special because my husband really wants to keep it!  (I'll make him one for Christmas though!)

Here is was in its preliminary cut-out stage.  I used a photo in a recent Entertainment Weekly issue (that featured Matt Smith as The Doctor on the cover) as reference...even though I've made a TARDIS craft before...a T-shirt for my husband.

So...what is The TARDIS all you non-geeks ask?...well TARDIS stands for "Time And Relative Dimension In Space" and it's The Doctor's funny little time-machine/spaceship that looks like an old British Police Call Box, and its big feature is that it's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.  There's your geeky education for the day!

Etsy Favorite Friday!: Portal 2 Posters!

For this week's Etsy Favorite Friday, I give you some more evidence of my geekdom. I love Portal & Portal 2. The funny thing is that I've never actually played. I just enjoy watching my husband play (as does my mother! She actually gave Portal 2 to CJ for his birthday!). I have played the 2-player co-op games with him in Portal 2. But I get intimidated at the idea of playing the storyline by myself. I think I'd get frustrated. But it is a fascinating and funny game to watch.

Anyway, on to Etsy...I discovered these Portal 2 themed posters from theKROPshop in my search for items to include in my Through the Portal treasury I decided to make. I love the beautifully simplified graphics paired with humorous quotes from the Portal 2 game.

Wheatley is an interesting little character. My favorite thing about him, besides his British accent, is that he is essentially just a ball/eye, but designed in a way so that he is able to emote so well! The game designers did a wondrous job with him. (As a side note...speaking of wondrous jobs and Wheatley...check out this Wheatley puppet someone made for a cosplay! It's awesome!)

I think this poster would be perfect for an office cubicle! I may need to order one or two of these posters for CJ for his home office for Christmas. When we play the co-op game together, he's Atlas (blue), and I'm P-Body (orange)...(which I find humorously appropriate, since P-Body has a bit of a more feminine walk & build.) Be sure you go to TheKROPshop's Etsy shop to see more posters.

***If you've never seen the Portal games and have no idea what I'm talking about, my apologies. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you can do a search on YouTube and check out some of the videos posted of the gameplay.

Etsy Favorite Friday!: The House of Mouse

I had a thing about mice when I was a little girl (a good "Oh They're so cute!" thing, not a bad "Eeek!" scared of them thing). I loved mice. I loved movies and books about them. An American Tail was my favorite movie when I was 5. I even had a pet mouse for a little while that I named Fivel. I loved to draw mice. I used to draw a little mouse in the margin or at the top of all my school papers in elementary school. (with sad faces on the math paper mice...because I didn't like math!)

Well, this Etsy seller, TheHouseOfMouse, combines my childhood love of mice and my current love of the geeky (and British).

"The House of Mouse is a sister-act made up of two British sisters; Anna and Naomi. Anna founded The House of Mouse in 2007 and Naomi joined to make a partnership in 2010. Both Anna and Naomi sew and share the duties of this full-time business." (from their Etsy profile)

They don't only have geeky, British, pop culture mice though. Take a look at the shop and check out all the different kind of mice they make.

CJ's New TARDIS Shirt

CJ made himself a TARDIS T-shirt a few years ago using T-shirt iron-on transfer paper, but the design has since faded so much that you can barely recognize what the design is even supposed to be (I suspect it's partially my fault for not washing it correctly). Anyway, I had an idea to make him a new one for his birthday this year...one that wouldn't get ruined if it didn't get washed correctly. So I appliqued a simple, minimalist TARDIS design using T-shirt scraps!

I met a kid at the craft show who loves Doctor Who too. It's such a niche kind of thing here in the States that people that like Doctor Who get all excited when we meet other people you like it too!...because most other people just think you're weird!

Treasury Tuesday: The Mad Man With A Box

Yes...I am a geek. I like Doctor Who. And there are more geeky, crafty people on Etsy who like Doctor Who too.

Amy: "I started to think you were just, like, a mad man with a box."
The Doctor: "Amy Pond, there's something you better understand about me 'cause it's important, and one day your life may depend on it...I am definitely a mad man with a box!"

Sadly, I can't say that I'm an old-school Doctor Who fan. My husband got me into the newer "relaunch" seasons that first came out in 2005. The 10th Doctor (David Tennant) was my "first" and favorite Doctor. Although I am liking the current Doctor, #11 (Matt Smith).

Sorry...none of this probably makes any sense if you've never seen the show. And if that's the case, my apologies (my mother is most likely rolling her eyes and Grandma probably has a quizzical look)...and just know that I'm simply a sci-fi geek.

TARDIS Tees

Okay...I am a self-admitted geek. Specifically, a sci-fi/fantasy geek. I was blog-surfing and came across a post on GeekCrafts about Dr. Who inspired crafts and from there came across a blog post about a TARDIS T-shirt. I was inspired myself to make my own TARDIS design to silk-screen onto a t-shirt for my husband (he's the one who got me into Dr. Who). I wish I'd had this thought sooner, I would have made it to give to him for his birthday (which is today). The top design is his pick. The second design is just another one I came up with that I liked. Yay for Photoshop filters!

So...what is The TARDIS all you non-geeks ask?...well it's the Doctor's funny little time-space ship that looks like an old British Police Call Box, and its big feature is that it's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Well, upon seeing my designs (which I'm planning on silk-screening), he got all inspired to make his own full-color TARDIS shirt using some t-shirt iron-on transfer paper we had lying around.

I find it funny and ironic that he's wearing a shirt with a British pop culture icon on America's Independance Day. Hee hee...
