What's-On-My-Work-Table Wednesday: Safety Eyes on a Barn Owl Nubbin

Often I am asked about the eyes I use for the Nubbins.  They are called "safety eyes" because they are child/baby safe.  Once they go on, they don't come off.  The only way they come off is if the fabric around the eye is torn.  Here is how I put them on...

This is how the eyes look when I take them out of the package.  There are two pieces: The black eye piece and the plastic washer.  I buy my safety eyes at Dan's Crafts & Things in Webster, NY, since that is where I can find them in bulk for the best price (50 eyes in a package. The price varies based on the eye size).  I usually use 12mm and 9mm size for my "classic" Nubbins and some of the special edition Nubbins, and I use 15mm for the Owl Nubbins.

I use a seam ripper to make a small hole where I want the eye to go...

Then I push the post of the eye through the hole...

Then, on the inner side of the fabric, I snap the plastic washer onto the post.  The ridges on the post make the washer stay on permanently.

This is how the eyes look on the back side...

And the safety eyes are on!  After that comes the stuffing, then hand-stitching the stuffing hole closed!
Now you know my secret!
