And I can't forget about posting my first baby blanket!
I made it for my friend Rachel's baby boy JW. I started it before he was born (he's now about 3-4 months old or so). I did the main part of it on one of my knitting looms. It was one of those projects that I worked on and then set aside for awhile. I had the main part laying around for a long time, thinking it was too small, but I finally finished it by crocheting the border on last Sunday during church. It's amazing how much just a border can do!

Everyone's goin Etsy!
I always do try to give good old John Murphy some props now and again, since it was his book "Stupid Sock Creaures" that gave me the initial inspiration for starting my foray into plush monster-making. So I gotta give the guy some credit.
Where did my copy of that book go anyway? I let a friend borrow it and never got it back...

Cool Books for the Old Timey & Crafty Soul
"Frontier fun meets a home-spun touch in this heart-warming mixture of pioneer projects and wistful nostalgia. Jennifer Worick teaches readers how to sew a quilt, master the art of bread-and-butter pickles, speak old-time slang, and much much more. This is for the legions of Laura Ingalls Wilder fans who have dreamed of what a pioneer life out on the prairie would be like. Combining step-by-step how-to on crafts, with tongue-in-cheek instructions on prairie slang, winning a spelling bee, and singing a lullaby, The Prairie Girl's Guide to Life allows fans to finally act out their childhood dreams or to simply enjoy the vicarious thrill of reading about it one more time. This is a book that will pull at the heart strings of every childhood Laura and also teach us a few prairie-time crafts along the way. " (description from Amazon.com)I also found the author's blog! http://jenniferworick.blogspot.com/ That kind of makes her seem like a real person instead of an author. She has a blog and uses blogger like the rest of us normal people who've never published a book!
The Prairie Girl's Guide kind of reminds me of The Daring Book for Girls (the girl's version of The Dangerous Book for Boys), except a little more old-timey. Actually, at Amazon.com, The Daring Book for Girls is on the "Customers who bought this book also bought..." list.
"The Daring Book for Girls is the manual for everything that girls need to know—and that doesn't mean sewing buttonholes! Whether it's female heroes in history, secret note-passing skills, science projects, friendship bracelets, double dutch, cats cradle, the perfect cartwheel or the eternal mystery of what boys are thinking, this book has it all. But it's not just a guide to giggling at sleepovers—although that's included, of course! Whether readers consider themselves tomboys, girly-girls, or a little bit of both, this book is every girl's invitation to adventure." (description also from Amazon.com)I think it's so funny how I'm drawn to these kind of books. I'm this contradiction of a very modern technology and media oriented woman (I love my laptop and cell phone)...but deep inside I see myself as having a heart for an older and simpler time...as evidenced by my love of Rennisaisance Faires and period piece films (I love almost any movie set before the 1900's). And I'm intrigued by learning to do the things that people did in the days before modern technology (even though I still love my modern technology...I feel naked if I leave the house without my cell phone!)
My husband and I first found The Dangerous Book for Boys at Sam's Club. I was walking past the books and the title caught my eye. We thumbed through it and thought it was brilliant. We bought 3 copies, one for us and two to give to friends. A couple months later, around Christmas time, I spotted The Daring Book for Girls and swapped a pair of pants I got as a present, which didn't fit, and was returning for it.But these kind of books are the kind that make me look forward to having kids and teaching them all this cool, fun, productive, and useful stuff.
I'm really into knitting/crocheting right now (as anyone who actually reads this blog probably knows by my previous posts) and I'm really having a hankering to either go visit my grandma again for anoyther knitting lesson, or have her come visit me and have her as the guest of honor at a knitting party with my friends from church who knit/crochet or are learning to knit/crochet. I've been passing out my extra AC Moore coupons to my friends who are just starting to learn so they can get the materials.
I knit/crochet most often in church. There's just something about keeping your hands busy. And it's funny...it's become inevitable that during church, at least one or two people around me end up borrowing a ball of yarn and knitting needles/crochet hook. I'm contagious!
A couple weeks ago, my friend Paulina who was born and grew up in Kenya (she came to the US when she was in 7th grade) asked if she could pick up my knitting needles and I was amazed at how fast she was...and how she didn't even have to look at what she was doing! But she told me that she learned to knit at a young age because in Africa, it's not like you can just go to the store and buy clothes. Just hearing that kind of puts things into perspective.
Bitten by the Spring Cleaning Bug
So after last weekend, this Saturday we got the bug to rearrange our bedroom, since it's been in the same configuration for a year. It;'s so nice and refreshing to have such a simple change as rearranging the furniture. And CJ made an upholstered shelf for our headboard, which looks so professional (his first time upholstering anything!)
...picture coming soon...
I have to say, I can't wait to paint these two rooms though! Guess what I'll be working on come summertime!

Dreaming of Spring Sunsets...
I originally orchestrated it in photoshop for a new wallpaper for my laptop. Here's the old one...
And the new...
I love my new background. My husband said it looks like a photograph the first time he saw it...but the truth is that I made it entirely out of elements in photoshop (special brushes I've downloaded, gradient tool, cloud rendering filter).
I've had the first one all winter, and although pretty, I was bored with it and it seemed a little...cool feeling...too wintery. I was craving something warmer, so I made the new one to encourage thoughts of spring. By the time March rolls around, I think everyone is sick of winter and yearning for spring and summer. The last few days, seeing the sun makes me happier. Whereas, last week was so cloudy and snowy, I felt tired and icky all week. I'm craving sun and blue skies.
And the purply orange skies too. I haven't taken the time to watch a sunset in forever. I used to watch the sunset every night when I was a teenager through my bedroom window (before my I moved to basement and became the "cellar dweller" as my Dad would call me).

On to Crocheting!
Speaking of crochet, I've moved on from knitting to crocheting. My grandma told me when she was teaching me to knit that once you start crocheting, you'll never go back to knitting, since it's quicker and easier. I think I'm inclined to agree. Not that I'll totally give up knitting...I know I'll get back to it eventually.
My husband and I watched "Ratatoullie" on DVD tonight and I crocheted. I'm crocheting myself a scarf out of the rusty orange Homespun. It'll be gorgeous when it's done! I learned about double crochet stitch tonight too and incorperated it into this scarf. I single crochet one row, then double crochet the next.

"Knit 101" book review on Whipup.net
So...am I a "younger audience"? I like the knitting books that are aimed at a "younger audience" because the other ones just seem so boring. I actually did get t"Knit 101" book for its beginner intructions. I like how it has knitting and crocheting instructions/tutorials in there. I only own one knitting book and the pictures are so small that it's hard to use them for reference. And I have no books on crocheting.

Encouragement & Issues
I'm also trying to make myself a name & logo for my shop and I keep running into a snafoo. I have two main things that I do...sock monsters and paintings. But they tend to be on different sides of the spectrum from each other. My monsters are wacky and whimsical, but my paintings are more serious. And I'm having trouble figuring out a logo that represents them both and doesn't lean too far one way of the other.

All I need for Valentine's day...

My husband.Oct. 2004: We were both in a church Christmas musical and were prerecording the vocals...and he was asleep on the floor of the recording studio while waiting for his turn. I was bored (as well as secretly crushing on him) and sketched him in my notebook.

Wrist warmers, a day off, and new knitting book
The wrist warmers are surprisingly easy to make when I'm using the knitting loom. I think I'm finally getting a good groove down with it. I just have to count the stitches on the first glove in order to make the second one the same length.
The only issue I have with making them on the looms is that you can't make them tighter/closer knit like you could on needles. Especially with the "Red Heart" yarn, you can see your hand through the knit. It goes better when I use the "Lion Brand Homespun" yarn, -probably because of the fuzziness of the yarn. I bet it would be better if I used a thicker, "chunky" kind of yarn. Or I want to try knitting with double strands using both the Red Heart and Homespun together.
Anyway...my mom called at 6:00 or so this morning to let me know that she saw on the news that the school district I work for was closed. She's an aide at a different district, and hers was closed as well. I'm guessing because of the temperature and wind chill facor is why the schools were closed...so it wasn't really a "snow day", more of a "too darn cold" day. The funny thing was that the city schools were still open and parents were urged to "use their judgement", which is odd because the city schools are usually the ones to close at the drop of a hat because most of the kids walk to school.
I was glad of the day off though. I wasn't looking forward to the commute out to Irondequoit after everything that happened yesterday with the big 36-car-pileup accident on 390. But after driving out to meet my mom for lunch, I feel a little better and less tweaky about driving. The weather really wasn't that bad while I was out. A bit frigid, but sunny and blue skies, and it wasn't as crazy with windblown snow like yesterday.
I got another T-shirt remnant monster done today, but my camera battery was going dead while I was shooting the picture of the wrist warmers, so I'll post a picture of him when it charges.

Huge Car Accident in Rochester
We were on our way to have our typical Sunday lunch with my parents. We left the house at 12:30 ish to get to the resturaunt by 12:45. It was blue sunny skies, but the wind was blowing snow across the highway (390 south) so bad that it caused a whiteout...and then everyone on the highway stopped. Then there were emergancy vehicles trying to get through to the accident ahead that had cause us to stop. We couldn't see what was going on through the mass of cars and the firetruck that had driven up the left side and parked just ahead of us. We sat there for an hour and a half...wondering what was going on...scanning the radio stations for any sign of what might have happened...entertaining ourselves by reading my old children's books I got from my parents' house and still have in a crate in the back seat of my car. Finally, a policeman said they'd be having us back up one car at a time and turn around to drive to the turnaround (the ones you see the Troopers parked at that always have the "no U turn" signs on them) and get to the northbound side of the highway to then detour to wherever we needed to go. Thankfully, the closest exit was the one we needed to get off on to get back home. When we got home, CJ said it was the "Longest, shortest trip ever"
It had been a 36 car pileup. 36!
Reformed Monsters and My First T-shirt Remnant Monster
And I just made a monster entirely on my new sewing machine! The only thing I hand sewed on him is, appropriately enough, his heart. He's also my first "T-shirt remnant monster" (I think I'll call him Remmy) I made him out of the scraps left over from my husband's (yet unfinished) t-shirt quilt project.

The monsters have taken me hostage!
Help meeeeee!
Fabric Storage Baskets tutorial link

Sorry I haven't posted any of my own stuff lately. I actually do have two new monsters that keep pestering me about when they're going to get their facetime in the blog. I suspect they may start holding me hostage soon if I don't meet their demands! I don't have to work tomorrow so I'll have some more time to be crafty, so I promise I'll get some of my own stuff up then! (I'm mostly blogging about this link because I'm on my lunch break at work and can't bookmark the page!)
Oh...this link too! Making cable knits on a loom! (I do most, if not all, of my knitting on knitting looms)

New Sewing Machine & Plans for "going Etsy"

summer. Right now I've been taking mental note of sites that have advice on having a successful Etsy shop. One I've found so far is here on the Greenbean Baby Art Blog. And another one is a "30 Days to A Better Shop" series (see Day 1)on the Christina Perdue
Studios blog. Both of these are thanks to the Craft: blog for featuring them...I love that blog! I wonder what I'll have to do to get featured on the Craft: blog? It might help if I consistantly kept up with this blog. Oh wait!...they have a spot for you to Suggest A Site! Hmmm...I could wait for someone else to be kind and suggest me or I could just take the bull by the horns and suggest my blog myself. Does it seem narcissistic to do that? Hey...you gotta do something to promote yourself right!
